Exhibition produced in collaboration with the Musée des Beaux-arts de Rouen, with the support of the Norwegian Embassy in France and Norsk Fotografisk Fond.

 

In parallel with the exhibition Normans. Migrants, Conquerors, Innovators, retracing the history of the presence of the Norman peoples and their heritage, the Musée des Beaux-Arts welcomes three contemporary Norwegian photographers. For several years now, French museums have been revisiting the paintings of artists from northern countries. The aim is to identify an aesthetic identity specific to this region, through the form or the subjects treated. These exhibitions complement a pronounced interest in Nordic literature and cinema. Photographic creation also continues to assert itself for its own qualities and finds a resonance in France.

 

This exhibition accompanies this movement, responding to the desire to discover new territories of visual creation. Marie Sjøvold, Ole Marius Joergensen and Terje Abusdal appropriate the photographic medium in different ways, evolving between documentary and fiction, and even extending the artistic gesture by using installations. Marie Sjøvold takes very sensitive snapshots into the intimacy of a family world, Ole Marius Joergensen delivers a fiction - the loneliness of a commercial traveller - based on cinematically resonant settings, and Terje Abusdal leads a documentary project that questions the heritage and identity of a community from a neighbouring country.

 

Testimony and narration, combined with a visual writing style that uses colour, contribute to the very particular universe into which these artists draw us. These three photographers from the same generation thus offer complementary approaches to their territory: they invite us on a journey into the Nordic country beyond the landscapes and lights that usually characterise it.
